Notes and comments

A decillion is 1030 or 1060. It is counted as follows: 103 is a thousand, 106 is a million, 109 is a billion = 106 (million) x 103 (thousand), and so on. Then a decillion is 106 x 1024 = 1030. On another scale: 106 – a million, 106×2 – a bilion, 106×3 – a trillion, 106×4 – a quadrillion, 106×5 – a quintillion, 106×6 – a sextillion, …, 106×10 = 1060 – a decillion. Tsiolkovsky apparently did not have the exact meaning of decillion in mind, but used it as a synonym for a very large number: a lot, darkness, a decillion of decillions.
