Notes and comments

A decillion is 10³⁰ or 10⁶⁰. It is counted as follows: 10³ is a thousand, 10⁶ is a million, 10⁹ is a billion = 10⁶ (million) x 10³ (thousand), and so on. Then a decillion is 10⁶ x 10²⁴ = 10³⁰. On another scale: 10⁶ – a million, 10^6×2 – a bilion, 10^6×3 – a trillion, 10^6×4 – a quadrillion, 10^6×5 – a quintillion, 10^6×6 – a sextillion, …, 10^6×10 = 10⁶⁰ – a decillion. Tsiolkovsky apparently did not have the exact meaning of decillion in mind, but used it as a synonym for a very large number: a lot, darkness, a decillion of decillions.
